The following instructors have volunteered at Rock Camp within the past two years, and are offering lessons outside of camp. Private lessons are not affiliated with BAGRC--this is simply a referral list for interested students.

Alena Coons / Lessons: Bass

Locations: Lessons at the student's home in Berkeley, Emeryville, Albany, or El Cerrito

Bio: As a bass instructor and bass support person with BAGRC, I have focused on ways to keep beginning students engaged in learning music. I adjust bass lessons to fit a student's learning style. My goal is to help learners build strong foundational skills while staying enthusiastic and motivated.

Catherine Mehta / Lessons: Vocals, Keyboard

Locations: Student's homes in Oakland & Berkeley

Rate: $70/hr, $40/half-hour, trades & discounts available

Bio: I have been teaching private lessons for 4 years and taught in public schools and centers before that. I have a Music Performance Certificate from Denison University. Chanelle Ignant / Lessons: Guitar

Locations: I live in West Oakland, and can host lessons at my house or travel to the student's home.

Rate: Negotiable

Bio: With over 10 years of playing experience, I'm comfortable teaching various styles on both acoustic and electric guitar for all experience levels. My current band blends jazz and R&B styles. I've been teaching music informally for two years, and I first volunteered with BAGRC in the summer of 2017.

Gesine Lohr / Lessons: Keyboard

Locations: I travel to student's home, in Oakland, Alameda, nearby.

Rate: Serious sliding scale, negotiable (I am happy to give a first lesson free, and want girls to have access to lessons)

Bio: I love keyboards! I've played rock keyboard since 1981, played & taught piano, rock keyboard, harpsichord, & drums. I've been in a number of rock and blues bands (several all female). Since 2011 I've taught rock keyboard at BAGRC and do keyboard support at BAGRC. You can make powerful keyboard lines and parts, from very simple bits!

Jean Richter / Lessons: Guitar, Keyboard

Location: No place to hold lessons - willing to travel to east bay cities

Rate: Negotiable

Bio: I have been playing guitar since age 12, and have several years of formal keyboard training. I have played in a number of bands over the years. I play mostly rock, but have also played other styles such as folk and classical. I have taught at BAGRC since 2012 (mostly guitar, some keyboard).

Jesseka Barbosa / Lessons: Keyboard, piano, beginner violin
Locations:  I presently do the bulk of my teaching for ACME music @ 4444 Piedmont Ave, Oakland - (510) 655-2263. I have limited availability for in-home lessons. Would make hardship exceptions to Girls Rock attendees on scholarship/aid, schedule permitting.

Bio:  I started teaching music in 1998 and have been for the better half of 20 years. I teach privately, primarily, though since moving to Oakland, I've taken on group keys instruction roles at Thornhill Elementary, in addition to my work for BAGRC. I am delighted to also contribute to BAGRC as Band Manager

Katie Schwarz / Lessons: Guitar

Location: East Bay, in home of student or teacher

Rate: $25/half hour, $40/hour

Bio: I’ve played acoustic and electric guitar for 20 years, as well as playing in a dreampop/punk band and a bluegrass guitar duo. I’ve taught guitar to youths from ages 8 to 18, beginner to intermediate, at Bay Area Girls Rock Camp and Girls Rock After School Program in Oakland.

Kira Gelbaugh / Lessons: Guitar, Bass

Location: Teach from my home studio in Montclair, Oakland

Rate: Past students have paid $40 per hour, negotiable

Bio: I've played bass for 5 years, and am taking adv. Jazz and AP Music Theory this year. 4 years of jazz / 3 years rock band experience. I've taught and mentored at BAGRC twice and it's been a wonderful experience!

Mya Byrne / Lessons: Guitar, Bass, Vocals, songwriting, mandolin, steel guitar

Locations: I'm in Lake Merritt at the moment, with a car, so can go anywhere or a student could come to my studio space.

Rate: negotiable

Bio: I'm a career musician, touring and opening for heroes like Levon Helm and Steve Forbert. I love teaching performing/songwriting skills and technique in many styles, and work to the specific wants of the student. I'm also a trans activist, actor, and published poet. myabyrne.com

Bio: I've been part of the BAGRC fam since 2016, and a private teacher for 7 years. My teaching style is playful and curious to encourage creative exploration and confidence. I work to bring out each students unique expression, tailoring lessons to my student's individual needs, strengths, and goals.
