PROGRAM DETAILS:

 Activities at GRASP:

  • TUESDAYS:

    • Instrument instruction: At BAGRC, we offer a curriculum that encourages creative exploration with an emphasis on process. Students learn to compose, arrange, and improvise music on the instrument of their choice: guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, or vocals. No musical experience is required and we provide instruments for everyone (but students are welcome to bring their own guitars or basses).

  • THURSDAYS:

    • Band practice: Students form bands with their peers during the third week of GRASP, and work together to collaboratively write an original song. Each band works with a mentor (their "band manager") who provides guidance, encouragement and instrument support throughout the songwriting process. There is optional instrument instruction available, if students can arrive at 3:30.

  • Workshops:

    • Students attend workshops during every session of GRASP.  Workshops are geared toward increasing music skills, self-expression and building confidence, while challenging gender stereotypes and addressing discrimination. Workshops at GRASP are catered to each age group and may include Music Herstory, Zine & Comic Making, Screenprinting, Vocal Intensive, Using Pedals to Modify Your Sound, Video-making, Songwriting, How to Book a Show, Breakdancing, Self-Defense, Percussion and more. Tuesdays and Thursdays

  • Showcase on March 14th:

    • Each band performs its original song for an audience of adoring friends, family and fans.

    • The showcase runs from 3:00-4:30pm and will be held at the Bandcamp store in Downtown Oakland (1901 Broadway).
