Program & Outreach Coordinator at Bay Area Girls Rock Camp

Bay Area Girls Rock Camp (BAGRC) is a nonprofit organization that empowers girls through music education, creation, and performance. We offer a space where girls can express themselves creatively through music and collaborate in a supportive environment. We hold year-round programs serving a diverse community of girls in terms of race, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, ability, and neighborhood. Our office and programs are located in Downtown Oakland. 

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Program & Outreach Coordinator is responsible for program coordination, camper registration, and community and youth outreach for all of our youth programs (Girls Rock After School Program [GRASP], Advanced Music Program [AMP], Summer Camp).  BAGRC is a young and growing organization, and offers lots of opportunities for exploring new ideas in programming and outreach.  

The Program & Outreach Coordinator is a member of the BAGRC staff collective.  BAGRC’s organizational structure is non-hierarchical and we work in a collaborative fashion.  Staff members are accountable to each other, and to the Board of Directors.  

GENERAL STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES:

    •    Support ongoing organizational development through monthly visioning meetings, strategic planning, and trainings.
    •    Participate in staff development activities via weekly staff meetings, occasional trainings, and teamwork meetings.
    •    Support the Board of Directors and attend Board and committee meetings as needed.
    •    Represent the organization in community settings as needed.
    •    Be available to work additional hours during Summer Camp weeks.
    •    Additional duties, as needed.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES of the PROGRAM & OUTREACH COORDINATOR:

Program Design & Implementation
    •    Collaborate with staff on program and curriculum development and implementation
    •    Manage logistics for programs: daily schedules, workshops, lunchtime performances, and showcases
    •    Work with staff to coordinate campers and volunteers during program weeks
    •    Coordinate snacks/food for all programs
    •    Support youth campers and families as needed
    •    Partner with staff to develop, distribute, and analyze program evaluations; collect data for reporting
    •    Explore opportunities for taking program in new directions, such as developing partnerships with other organizations, expanding and diversifying our workshop and program offerings, etc.

Camper Registration & Logistics
    •    Receive and process applications for Summer Camp and Girls Rock After School Program (GRASP)
    •    Maintain communication with parents
    •    Connect campers with performance opportunities throughout the year

Outreach
    •    Make presentations and distribute fliers at schools, community centers, after-school programs, etc
    •    Post program info and applications on listservs, newsletters, blogs, Craigslist, etc.
    •    Identify new opportunities for community outreach and engagement
    •    Send out press releases for programs and events

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    •    Commitment to furthering our mission of empowering girls and women
    •    Experience working with diverse groups of youth and their families (2+ years preferred)
    •    Experience developing and delivering youth programming
    •    Experience playing one or more of the instruments offered at our programs (bass, drums, guitar, keyboards, vocals)
    •    Strong written and verbal communication skills, experience in public speaking
    •    Highly organized with strong attention to detail
    •    Ability to multi-task and meet competing and strict timelines
    •    Proficiency with email, Google Docs and Excel spreadsheets

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    •    Familiarity with BAGRC or another girls rock camp organization
    •    Background in youth development
    •    Experience in program evaluation and reporting
    •    Experience training and/or supporting volunteers
    •    High level of self-motivation, creativity, and openness to learning
    •    Experience in working in non-hierarchical environments, with the ability to work accountably both independently and as part of a team
    •    Commitment to open and direct communication
    •    Demonstrated commitment to self-care and personal sustainability


STATUS:
    •    40 hours per week.  Schedule is somewhat flexible; includes some weekday evening hours during after-school program sessions, occasional weekend hours for community events and fundraisers, as well as additional hours during summer camp sessions.
    •    Salary equivalent to $17/hour with benefits (medical and dental)
    •    Preferred start date: 4/2/12
    •    Place of Employment: BAGRC Office, 455 17th Street, Oakland, CA and other downtown Oakland program locations.
