Advanced Music Program

The Advanced Music Program (AMP) is an 11-week program for girls ages 13-18 with prior music experience. Students form bands, write songs, record in a professional studio, and attend workshops geared toward developing tools to sustain a long-term band.

AMP Dates:

AMP Activities:

  • Band Practice: Students form bands on the first day of AMP, and work with their band to collaboratively write songs. Volunteer mentors ("band managers") assist as needed with the songwriting process.
  • Workshops: Students suggest and vote for the workshops they want to attend. Workshops at AMP 2011 included Stop Motion Video Making, Building Radio Transmitters, Show Booking, Image & Identity/Healthy Relationships, and Merch Making.
  • Exciting Off-Site Activities: One day of the program is spent at a professional recording studio, where each band records the songs they've written for the AMP Compilation. At AMP 2011, bands also had the opportunity to play a live in-store event at Amoeba Records in Berkeley.
  • The Showcase: Each band performs the songs they've written at a live showcase, open to the public. The AMP 2011 showcase was at the 924 Gilman St. Project, and the 4 AMP bands were joined by local all-women bands Grass Widow and Erase Errata.

Sample Schedule:

Saturdays
10:00am - 12:00pm: Band Practice
12:00 - 12:30pm: Lunch
12:30 - 1:30pm: Workshop

Tuition:

Full tuition for AMP is $350. Full and partial financial aid is available upon request.
